As part of their unit on SALT, the 1st Grade students investigated how to make an egg float in water.  What makes it float?

The whole lesson was in English, including the scientific names and explanations.  In particular, we looked at the following terms:  solution, solute, solvent, dissolve, soluble, and insoluble.  However, the main discussion was on density, and designing a scientific experiment that can show the effect of changes in density.

As expected, “hands-on” experiments are always the most enjoyable and beneficial for learning.

中学１年生は今、CLIL型授業で「塩」について学習しています。今回は、塩水にたまごを浮かせる実験をしました。なぜ、たまごは塩水に浮くのでしょうか。

授業はもちろん、物質の名前や説明もすべて英語でした。今回は特に「solution溶液、solute溶質、solvent溶媒、dissolve溶解、soluble溶けやすい、insoluble溶けにくい」といった単語を重点的に学習しました。また、density濃度の違いが結果にどのように影響するのか話し合い、それに関する実験を生徒たちで考えるといったことにも取り組みました。

「実際に自分の手で触れる」ことは、学習を楽しく・有意義なものにするということを改めて感じました。
