今ではすっかりインターネットが発達して、Eメールのやり取りの比重が高くなりましたが、
立教英国学院では、手紙や小包みのやり取りが、ある一定数あります。
Eメールでぱっと送れるからこそ、デザインも様々な切手や、手で書かれた手紙が
ほっと心を温かくしてくれるかのようです。

この切手を立教英国学院では集めています。
呼びかけるのは生徒。
むかし小学生だった時に学んだ「社会協力」の授業。これをもとに始めました。
それ以前にも集めていた使用済み切手ですが、
小学生が収集箱をていねいにつくり、全校に声を掛けて、
用の済んだ切手を切り取ってもらい箱に集めます。
学期ごとに箱を開けて、中の切手を分類。
日本の切手はデザインが素敵で鮮やかで楽しい。
様々な国から来ている生徒もいるので、いろいろな国のかわいらしい切手や
意表をつくデザインもあります。
最後に、送付の手紙を書いたら、日本キリスト教海外医療協力会に郵送しています。

今は中学2年生になった生徒たちが、ぼろぼろになった箱やポスターを処分し、
この3月に新しく収集箱を作り直しました。
全校の先輩がた、後輩たち、先生にも声をかけて、改めて使用済み切手を集めるプロジェクトがスタート。
彼女たちはこれからも有志で続けてくれるそう。
もし気持ちを持って取り組んでくれる後輩たちが入ってくれたら大歓迎だそうです。

I went to the Millais School for 1 week as an exchange student.
I learned a lot of things. It gave me precious memories.

My situation was a little different from others. I had just 6 days before I can meet my partner.
I was looking forward to meeting my partner. March 10 was my first time to go to Millais School and meet my partner. I was thinking about many questions for her. But when the time came to meet my partner there was no word coming out from my mouth, because I was so nervous. I just exchanged greetings with her on that day.

At night, I regretted that I did not speak much with her.
And I decided to talk anything if I got nervous.
From March 11 to 14, I talked to her as much as I could.
We went bowling, ate dinner with my host family, played games, stopped by some places on the way …….
There were many chances to talk to her and we became close friends little by little.
I was happy even if topics of our conversation were trivial.

On March 14, I heard that it was the last day to meet her.
On the evening, we ate dinner at our friend’s house and watched movies.
Then, the time to say good-bye came.
I had a lump in my throat and tears welled up in my eyes.
I did not want to say good-bye. But I could not find out words to tell her.
” See you again ” she said.
She told me that this was not the last time for me to see her , and we could meet again.
We are definitely to meet if we want to.

I learned not only English but also something more important through this exchange.

3学期の、小・中１のフィールドワークは、地元クランレー村の聖ニコラス教会で行いました。
2年前にも同じ場所で行いましたが、非常に面白いワークとなったお勧めの教会です。

生徒たちが「へぇっ！」と感心する、この教会の面白５大ポイントは？

１．教会はいつ出来たか？
12世紀の終わり、1170年ごろ。
「えっ？それって、イイクニ作ろう鎌倉幕府よりも前？源平合戦よりも前？」
と驚きの古さ。

２．守護聖人は？
セント・ニコラス。
彼は子供ならだれでも知っている「ある人」のモデルです。
イギリス式に言うと、FATHER CHRISTMAS！

３．ステンドグラスのある窓と、ない窓があるのはなぜ？
第二次世界大戦のとき、空襲で近くに爆弾が落下し、
爆風でステンドグラスが割れてしまったから。
献金や記念行事で新しく作られたステンドグラスも２か所あるけれど、
戦争の爪痕として今も語りつがれています。

４．外から見ると目立つ塔に一体どこから登れるの？
教会の一番後ろの壁のカゲの古い扉から。
古くてせまい、石造りの階段をのぼって塔にあがり、
屋根裏の鐘を見せてもらったら、鐘鳴らしをさせてもらいました。

生徒の質問①　鐘はいつ鳴らすの？
→礼拝の前や結婚式などの前がふつう
あとは火曜日の夜。鐘鳴らし役は決まっていて、練習するのだそうだ。
（ハッ！と気付く引率の先生。教会の近くに住んでいて、
火曜夜になぜガンガン鐘が鳴るのか、いま判明！）
生徒の質問②　いつ頃から鐘の当番をしているの？
→「君たちと同じ年頃からよ」と鐘当番のおばさん。
…ということは小学生くらいから、数十年！
びっくりです。

５．教会内をよーく探すと、「不思議の国のアリス」に登場するチシャ猫の彫刻！
チシャ猫は「CHECHIRE CAT（チェシャー州の猫）」から来ているみたいです。
アリスの作者ルイス・キャロルは、近くの町ギルフォードともゆかりがあるのですよ。

６．床の謎の記号を読み解け！
教会では一般的に床に墓石や記念碑がはめ込まれていますが、
数字が私たちのよく知る数字ではないことがよくあります。
たとえば…
ＭＤＣＣＣＬⅠⅠⅠ
そう、ローマ数字。
Ｍ＝1000　　　Ｄ＝500　　　Ｃ＝100
Ｌ＝50
にしたがって解くと、ＭＤＣＣＣＬⅠⅠⅠ＝1853年。
これにＸ（10）やＣ（100）の位置がかわるとちょっと複雑。
ＭＣ＝1100　　ですが　　ＣＭ＝900　　となります。
だから、ⅤⅠ（Ⅵ）は６で、ⅠⅤ（Ⅳ）は４なのですね。
「えぇぇぇぇ？」と混乱する生徒たち。

さて例題。
ＭＣＤＬＸＸⅠＸは？　　　　みなさん解けますか？

(こたえ：１４７９)

私は3月８日から３月１５日までの約１週間、ホーシャムから車で１０分ほど離れた村でホームステイをしました。交換留学前は、英国の一般的な家庭や学生の生活を体験できると思うととてもワクワクしていました。ホームステイ先はバディーのルーシーの家と聞いていましたが、ホームステイファミリーは優しい人たちなのだろうか、たくさん英語を話すことができるだろうかとやはり不安に思う部分も大きかったです。ですが、ホームステイファミリーはとても温かく、ステイ先は居心地が良かったです。交換留学を終えて振り返ってみると、多くの人との出会いや貴重な体験が出来、そこから学ぶことも多くとても有意義な交換留学になりました。

交換留学の１週間はとても暖かく黄色い鮮やかな水仙があちこちに咲く、春らしい陽気でした。交換留学では基本的に８時から３時までミレースクールに行き、その後は放課後でした。ミレースクールではルーシーと一緒に英語（国語）や数学、科学などの授業を受けたり、日本語のクラスでミレーの生徒たちに日本語を教えたりしました。ミレーでの授業は全く理解することが出来ず、ただ座っているだけで自分の英語はまだまだなんだと実感しました。ですが、ミレーの生徒たちは優しく話しかけてくれたので、英国の学校の雰囲気を楽しむ事が出来ました。そのほかに音楽の授業ではウクレレをひいたり、美術の授業では壺を作ったり、家庭科の授業ではパンを作ったりと日本の学校とは違い英国の学校では様々なことが学べるのだなと思いました。放課後はよくルーシーのミュージカルレッスンについていきました。レッスンには小さい子から高校生まで多くの子が参加していて、ミュージカルが盛んな英国ならではと思いました。

私がホームステイで一番大変だと思ったことは、会話です。自分の気持ちや考えを伝える事は出来るのに、話す速さが速すぎて、相手の話を聞き取ることが出来ませんでした。ルーシーとは夜にたくさん話すことが出来ましたが、ホームステイファミリーとの食事の時にみんなが何を話しているか全く分からず、こんなにも私は英語の実力がないのかととてもガッカリしました。ですが、落ち込むと同時に少しでも理解しようと積極的に会話に入るようになり、またルーシーのサポートもあり交換留学前よりも会話が出来るようになりました。会話の内容は他愛もない話から英国や日本の生活や文化などの違いでした。このとき、私は日本人でありながらもまだまだ日本について熟知していないと思いました。もっと日本の文化を知り、それを伝えていけたらより英国と日本の交流が深まると思いました。

私はただ単純に英語がうまくなりたいと思い、ミレースクールとの短期交換留学プログラムに参加しました。ですが、英国の生活や学校の様子を実際に体験できたことで私の視野は前よりも広がりました。また、リスニングの能力をもっと鍛えなければならないこと、日本のことをもっと知らなければならないことなど交換留学をやってみなければ分からない多くの課題を見つけることが出来ました。
私は、これから英語をもっと勉強して外国人となんなく「話せる」人になりたいと強く思います。そして、この経験を糧にしてさらなる外国との交流を広げていきたいです。

It was in January when my homeroom teacher offered us a chance to have an exchange with an English local school. Before I entered Rikkyo School I was at an international school, and because of that, I was able to speak a little bit of English. I decided to do the Millais School and Rikkyo School exchange because I wanted to make some kind of connection between the schools as well as connection between students.
When Millais exchanges came to Rikkyo, Rikkyo students and teachers tried their best to teach about Japan. At Millais school, we did not really learn about England, but all of the classes were taught in English so it was very new to us.

We also had an opportunity to learn Chinese; we learnt couple of Chinese characters and greetings.
One of the differences between Rikkyo and Millais was that students were allowed to choose which classes they would like to take. This was very interesting because most of the students we met in each class were new to us. All the students at Millais School were curious to learn not only Japanese language but also Japanese culture.

The class I enjoyed the most was the cookery class. We made bread with 23 students in the cookery. While baking the bread in the oven, we had time to communicate with Millais students who were about the same age as I was. This was amusing; we were able to hear a lot of funny stories about their
school teachers. This kind of free time made our conversation grow livelier.
It feels as if I had spent a very long time at Millais School because every day was filled with many excitements and many enjoyments. After school, our exchanges had planned many activities to do with us: hopping, bowling, laser quest, party and so on. On the night before our exchange finished, one of the exchanges invited us to their house to have a party. We went to her house and ate fish and chips, did small fire works in the garden and watched a DVD called Twilight. At the party, I got really close with the buddy of another Rikkyo student. Until then I was not really close to that girl but the mood of the party made us really good friends.

Right now most of the students who have done the exchange are still keeping in touch. We are planning to meet up in Japan after they graduate from high school.
After finishing this exchange, I sometimes feel a little bit of loneliness. This is the evidence to show how much I enjoyed this exchange.

I really appreciate that the both schools gave us such a great chance to have a connection between us. I would definitely recommend to other students to think about taking part in the language exchange or even trying out with the speaking club held at Rikkyo School on every Tuesdays after school.

Dear Rikkyo staff and students!

Thank you so much for allowing me to stay at Rikkyo for a week and experiencing how your school works, it was most enjoyable.
At the start of the exchange I was incredibly nervous as my Japanese isn’t very good and so I thought that I might have trouble communicating, but after 30 minutes of being at Rikkyo due to everyone being so welcoming, I already felt at home.

It was especially nice that everyone was so kind and tried their hardest to speak English as my Japanese is very limited. It was so lovely to talk to everyone and take part in the afterschool activities which helped me get an insight into the Japanese culture and the traditional ceremonies in which you partake.

I would especially like to thank the teachers whose lessons I was in who tried to make me feel included, it was very interesting to see how your lessons compared to that of Millais. I really enjoyed meal times at Rikkyo as well, as it felt like it was just one huge family together. Whilst at Rikkyo I feel that my Japanese improved massively because of my amazing buddy Miyu who was always there to help me with my Japanese and I can’t thank her enough as without her I would have been lost and very confused.

It was a very interesting experience staying at Rikkyo, considering that the structure of the day is so different to how it is at Millais, as we finish at 3:00 pm and Rikkyo finishes a lot later but the time went so quickly. It was also really nice being in a mixed school, as Millais is an all girls school it made a nice change to be able to talk to boys as well! I’d like to thank all the girls who took part in the exchange who were all so good at English and made us feel a lot more relaxed about our stay.

I thoroughly enjoyed staying at Rikkyo and I really miss it and everyone there. I hope that we can stay in touch for a long time!

Dear The Rikkyo School and all its students,

Thank you very much for allowing the Millais girls to stay at the school for the week, and for treating us to such an enriching week. This exchange gave us the perfect opportunity to learn more about the Japanese culture, practice our Japanese speaking and listening skills and to make friends.
We are so grateful to you for allowing us to come and for taking time out of your days to plan such an amazing week for us. We thank you very much for organizing everything so there was always something fun for us to do, as well as going out of your way to accommodate all seven of us.
I know we all very much enjoyed trying on the Kimonos, learning about the Tea Ceremony, doing the flower arranging, and everything else that we did in the week, and we really enjoyed trying the Japanese food when we had it at dinner.

The whole exchange was really interesting and so much fun. Shadowing our buddies was so interesting too, as we got to see how their school day, life and subjects were different from ours, and in what ways. I found it very interesting to participate in the EC classes, as we could help, and it was a very good sense of achievement. I know we were all very impressed at the standard of English understood and spoken by the students, it was amazing!

Talking to all of the students, and learning things in lessons, like Japanese English, was enlightening for all of us, and we all feel like we have a much better understanding of not only the language, but the people and the culture as well and all around I think it was a trip that was exceptionally worthwhile. I know we all had an incredible time and would gladly spend another week there if given the chance. All of the students were so nice to us, and seemed interested in our life at and outside Millais, and it was great to talk to them, make loads of new friends, and meet so many new people. It is interesting to see how different their lives are compared to ours, as being at a boarding school for a week was a very big change for us.

All of our exchanges were amazing, and helped us so much in the week. I know that we all feel close to our exchanges, and cannot wait to see them again in March, when they come over to us for a week. We all made incredibly good friends with all the exchanges and it really brought us together. We all hope that our exchanges will enjoy staying with us as much as we enjoyed staying at Rikkyo, as we had an incredible time and would love to offer them the same.

All in all, we all really enjoyed this week and we hope that you will offer it to Millais students in years to come, as I know they would love it as much as we have.

To Rikkyo School

I would like to say a huge thankyou to every student and every member of staff for allowing me to come and stay for a week. I don’t think I could have had a better experience! I enjoyed myself so much!

I would also like to say thank you to Ayana, Kana, Miyu, Kaori, Kaho and Mayu for being so welcoming and friendly. And also, an extra special thank you to Erena and Chikako! Without them both, I would have thought that something was missing, but with them, being at Rikkyo was so enjoyable. Erena and Chikako made it really fun being at Rikkyo, and I’ve come back from the experience having made two really good friends and I am very grateful for that!

I really enjoyed the food and meal times. It was very different to how myself and my family do it. Also, I really enjoyed the English Communication classes because it gave me the opportunity to speak to other students and get to know them.

Overall, the whole Rikkyo experience was so enjoyable, and I will remember it forever!

今回の交換留学で学んだことはたくさんあります。
英語は勿論、始めて現地の学校の仕組みを目の当たりにして、立教や日本の学校との違いを知ることができました。
特に面白いと思った違いは3つあります。

1つ目は学校の仕組みです。
ミレースクールの建物は大体科目別になっていて、立教のように自分たちの教室で授業を受けることが少なく、毎回の移動がとても大変でした。皆が一斉に移動し、その上教室数が多いのではぐれそうになったりもしました。
またHRのような時間はなく、出欠を取るためだけの教室と担任、という感じでした。
教室は最早休み時間、昼休みなどの空いた時間のための 部屋、というイメージで、立教の私達の教室とはかなり違います。
また、ひとり一つの机がなく、長テーブルに各自座るようになっていて、イギリスらしいな、と思いました。

2つ目は人間関係についてです。
立教との違いを言うと、まずミレースクールには総勢1500人がいて、1学年でも300人の女の子たちがいること。
そしてもちろんホームルームが違えば関わりもほとんどなく、普段授業が重ならなければ話すこともないこと。
ここは日本の私立の学校と同じだな、と思いました。
しかし更に彼女たちは自分の好きな科目を選択するので、一人一人の時間割が違いました。
こうなると立教生のように全校の顔と名前が一致し、全員と話すような機会はありません。
私は交友関係が狭くなって 友達も出来にくいのではないかと思いましたが、特定の友達を大切にしていました。
こう考えると立教は人間関係を広く持つ事が出来、ミレーは狭く、その代わり深められる環境にあるのではないかと思いました。
やはり学校の環境が違うことは人間関係にも反映するのではないでしょうか。

3つ目は授業態度です。
私は何故か全員がきちんと授業を聞いていることに感動しました。
当たり前のことですが、どのクラスでも居眠りしている人がいないことはすごいと思いました。
ペアの子に聞いてみると、「居眠りは絶対ダメ」と言われました。
何がダメなのかと思って見ていると、グループ学習だからだ、と思いました。
先生が課題や話し合いの場を設けて周りで考えさせるので、寝る暇は ないのだと思います。
そこで思ったことは、日本は生徒が受け身ですが、イギリスは生徒が参加する教育だということです。
授業を聞かなくても白板を写せば何とかなる、という概念がなく、参加しなければいけない環境というのは案外生徒にとって良いのではないかと思います。

この他にもお菓子が持ち込み自由だったり、授業中に飲み物を飲んで良かったり、購買部があったりと色々な違いがありました。どちらが良いかなんて比べるには国も考え方も違いすぎますが、お互いにお互いの学校や文化の違いを分かり合えた良い機会になりました。これからもメールを続けるつもりなので、英語の応用力が上がればいいなと思います。
