英語圏と呼ばれる国や地域の中でも、実際に使われる表現や発音には多くの違いがあります。

今回は、ALTの先生が授業で紹介している、ニュージーランド英語にまつわる話をシリーズでご紹介していきます。

 

■It’s tea time.

 

If you hear “it’s tea time”, what do you think that means?

Perhaps you think it means “it’s time to drink tea.”

But in New Zealand that is not the case!

It means “it’s time to eat dinner!”

So if you go to New Zealand and someone says “tea’s ready!” or “it’s tea time,” it means: “Dinner is ready.” or “It’s time for dinner!”

 

「おやつの時間だよ」と誘われたと思ったら、夕食だったなんて、ほんとびっくりですね。
