オーストラリア・タスマニアにあるファーン校で現地の生徒のお宅にホームステイしながら、ファーン校と一緒に授業を受けたり行事に参加したりしています。本日は、ファーン校の生徒と合同で、運動会を実施しました。1種目目はクリケット。ボールを投げてバットで打つ野球に似たスポーツですが、タスマニアではポピュラーなスポーツです。2種目目は、日本の運動会ではお馴染みの玉入れ。最初に本校生徒がファーン生に英語でルールを説明しました。3種目目は、「大きなパンツ」。名前の通り、キングサイズのズボンを生徒2人で履いたまま競争します。3種目全部大変ヒートアップしました。生徒たちは “You did a good job!”や “We’ll done!!”などと英語でお互いのプレイを称え合う姿が印象的でした。 以下の文章は生徒がホストファミリーとの交流を通して感じたことです。
Through my stay in Tasmania, I have learned that communication goes far beyond just speaking the same language fluently; it is about empathy, openness, and the willingness to connect with others from the heart. First, living with my host family and playing their special daily sharing game showed me that sharing our feelings creates deep bonds. Even when I couldn’t express myself perfectly, moments like laughing together around the bonfire or dancing proved that shared experiences bridge the language gap. Second, my interactions at school with my day hosts taught me the power of active engagement and curiosity. Their efforts to speak Japanese and ask me questions reminded me that being a good communicator means showing genuine interest in the other people’s cultures and making an effort to understand one another. Finally, talking about difficult topics like politics and university with my host families was a huge challenge. Trying to explain my thoughts in English was sometimes frustrating, but it taught me resilience. I realized that effective communication requires courage – the courage to step out of my comfort zone, embrace mistakes, and keep trying. (M.I.)
