第8回　留学報告（4月）

Recently, the weather is getting hot like summer and it is more than 20℃ here in Cranbrook. Most of us are wearing T-shirts already. It is too nice out to be inside.

At school, I’m getting used to reading the textbook faster in social studies class than at the beginning of the semester. We are learning about the relationship between Canada and European countries in detail during the Second World War. We also learned about Japan at the same time. It is quite interesting to learn about history in other countries because they see things a little more differently than we Japanese do.

In art class, we worked on creating “designer clothing” out of recycled materials for “Trash Fashion Show”, which is held annually during Earth Week. My partner and I made a dress with woven tapes as the top part and newspaper as the skirt and many cranes of origami for decoration. It was very interesting to see so many unique costumes. We walked on a runway in the mall wearing our costumes. I modeled our own creation in the show. Though I was so nervous at that time, I was really happy, because I could experience to join the event as a designer and a model.

I joined Badminton club at school this semester. We have students from another school coming once a week to play games, which is a good opportunity to develop my skills. Now my afterschool is filled with ESL class, Choir and Badminton club.

There were some exciting events. At the beginning of this month I joined the annual event called “Spring Splash” at the Kimberley Alpine Resort. The participants skied or snowboarded from the top of the hill down and across a pond of cold water. All participants, including myself, ended up wiping out except for one. As some participants wore costumes when they had their turn, I wore Happi to show that I was from Japan. It was a very sunny day, so it made my clothes dry faster. I really had fun.

In the international program, we went to the professional Rodeo event, where we could see real cowboys and cowgirls. It was the first time to see them for me. They rode on the horses or cows and ran to catch the calves. They tied their legs together with ropes to secure them. I was surprised how fast they tied. I felt a taste of The Wild West at the event.

At the end of this month, my friend, Lioba, went back to Germany. We planned to make a surprise party at Emma’s house before she left. Thirty minutes before she came, we gathered to decorate the place. She was surprised! That was pretty great! We were outside, beside fire and roasted hot dogs and marshmallows. After a while, we came back inside and ate cakes and watched movies. She and I became very good friends during these last eight months. I can’t wait to see her again in the future.
