What is this object?

What is this object? You’re first response is probably ‘it’s a chair’, and possibly also ‘what a silly question’. But let’s think carefully about it for a moment. Read the following story carefully;
Imagine that in the middle of a big city, there is a house. In the house, there is a large room, with large windows. This room is incredibly light, and it is a warm summer day. At around mid-day, a man enters the room. He looks at this object (pictured above) and thinks ‘Ah yes, here’s something to sit on’. As he has been walking all day, he sits down and rests. After a while he looks at his watch and hurries out of the room. A few hours later, a dog enters the room, looks at the same object (pictured above) and thinks ‘this is somewhere to shelter from the hot sun’. The dog crawls under the object, lies down, and takes a long rest. Later on, the dog gets up and trots off, out of the room.
Now, reconsider. Is the object above something to sit on, or something to shelter under? Or is it something else? The answer is not immediately clear. After all, why should we say that this is *really* something to sit on if it can also be used to shelter under? Why are we so sure that it’s a ‘chair’ and not a ‘shelter’. Could it be something else- a weapon, or a potato masher? Perhaps not, but why? Or, imagine that you’ve never even seen or used this object, and never seen anyone else using it. What would it be to you then? It wouldn’t make sense to say either that it’s ‘something to sit on’ or ‘something to shelter under’ because in that situation you would have no experience of doing either of these things, and so no reason to think of the object in those ways.
These, and other challenging questions were discussed in a friendly and open way at the demonstration TOK class held on October 15th.
